Gestational diabetes is diabetes that occurs during pregnancy, the production of pregnancy-related hormones increase insulin resistance.
What is gestational diabetes?
Many pregnant women undergoing routine tests after the second trimester find that they have gestational diabetes, pregnancy involves a series of changes, the production of pregnancy-related hormones and weight gain lead to an increase in resistance of the insulin. Gestational diabetes in most cases is physiological and in fact does not involve serious dangers to the unborn or pregnant woman.
What are the symptoms of gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes does not carry many symptoms, other than simple signs such as dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, urinary infections and blurred vision. To remove any doubts, doctors advise pregnant women to undergo a screening called GCT (Glucose Challenge Test).
Gestational diabetes: when to worry?
Gestational diabetes does not carry serious health risks for the unborn or pregnant woman, but when gestational diabetes is underestimated it could carry several risks. If gestational diabetes is not controlled and monitored, it could lead to complications during pregnancy and during childbirth, gestational diabetes in the unborn child can cause:
- premature birth, difficult and dangerous childbirth
- low blood glucose levels soon after birth
- breathing problems
- increased risk of obesity or having type 2 diabetes in adulthood
To avoid the risks associated with gestational diabetes, doctors recommend a careful diet and to keep blood sugar under control.
