Drinking a lot of water is essential in all stages of life, but especially during the nine months correct hydration takes on particular importance both for the well-being of the mother and also of the baby.
How much water to drink in the nine months
During gestation, the need increases due to the particular physical conditions of the woman: a future mother should drink at least two liters of fluids a day, even two and a half liters in hot weather, she spends a lot of time in a dry and overheated environment and sweat more. To ensure this hydration, plain water is the best drink.
Which drinks to prefer and which ones to avoid
It is advisable to choose a type richer in minerals, especially calcium. This element is, in fact, important to keep the bones and teeth of the woman healthy, also ensuring an adequate supply to the baby that is forming. You can also drink more water during pregnancy by regularly consuming fresh fruit and vegetables. Instead, avoid sweet drinks, which provide plenty of calories and sugar, putting you at an increased risk of gestational diabetes and excess weight. Alcohol should also be avoided: they are harmful to the fetus and absolutely cannot be counted among the liquids that can be drunk during gestation.
Why it is important to drink more water.
There are many reasons why you need to drink more water during pregnancy. First, water helps maintain adequate blood volume and improves circulation even in the placenta, ensuring the delivery of nutrients to the fetus. It regulates the blood pressure of the pregnant woman, stimulates diuresis preventing the risk of urinary tract infections, first of all cystitis which is quite frequent while waiting. Ensures proper hydration, especially in the first months, when nausea and vomiting can expose you to increased fluid loss. Finally, drinking adequate amounts helps fight constipation, a disorder that affects many women during pregnancy.
